Early speed training for young prepubescent athletes is an extremely valuable aid in preparing athletes for sports competition later in life. Young athletes learn how to start and sprint with correct form long before poor habits are formed that are nearly impossible to break. Training focuses on proper progression based on age and uses a variety of modified training programs suitable and safe for young athletes: sprinting form and technique training, foundation training (core strength and flexibility, strength training for young athletes ), modified speed-strength training to increase ground contact force (amount of force applied in the pushing action away from the ground with each step during the start, acceleration and maximum speed phases of sprinting), and neuromuscular training (sprint-assisted, or overspeed training).
The YMCA’s listed below are NASE recommended youth speed training centers and each have Instructors who have been certified by the National Association of Speed and Explosion.
Instructors use sports speed training practices that are safe and suitable for young prepubescent athletes. The NASE 10-point testing program is administered to identify the factors that are preventing each athlete from sprinting faster in their sport such as the length of each stride, the number of steps taken per second (stride rate), acceleration time, mph speed, speed endurance, key strength/weight ratios, and muscle imbalances in the muscles involved in sprinting. Based on the strengths and weaknesses identified from test results, individualized speed improvement training programs are prepared and conducted at the YMCA.
The list of YMCA’s will expand rapidly as additional YMCA’s certify 1-2 instructors in speed and explosion.
