National Association of Speed and Explosion

Sports Speed Self-Testing Program PDF Print E-mail

A unique program for athletes in grades 8-12 (ages 13-19) involving the key speed tests used in Combines in the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), and Major League Soccer (MLS), and softball, tennis, lacrosse, rugby and field hockey.

Purpose of the NASE Self-Testing Program:
The first step to improving playing speed is to identify the factors that are preventing an athlete from sprinting faster in their sport.   The NASE Test Scores will reveal the length of your stride, the number of steps you take per second (stride rate), acceleration time, mph speed, speed endurance, key strength/weight ratios, muscle imbalances, an estimate of fast twitch muscle fiber in the muscles involved in sprinting, explosive power, quickness, and also test you in the unique speed-related areas of your sport or position. The strengths and weaknesses identified from test results will form the basis for the specific speed improvement program for your sport.   Scores are also compared to available norms for elite athletes to help set training goals for the future.

How to Begin:

  1. Upon receipt of payment, a detailed copy of the NASE Sports Speed Test Battery for your sport will be mailed to you.
  2. Your task is to complete each test with the help of a friend, parent, or coach, and submit your scores to the NASE.
  3. Your scores will be carefully analyzed by our staff and a personalized speed improvement program forwarded to you that is designed to eliminates the weaknesses identified.
  4. To improve your speed, you must follow this program for a minimum of 30 workouts.
